Trees we grind most in Golden Valley
Golden Valley’s hilly, wooded terrain along Bassett Creek supports a good stand of mature oak and American elm, some of it old enough to predate the neighborhood development around it. Dutch Elm disease has picked off a share of those elms over the decades, and emerald ash borer has done similar damage to the ash planted through mid-century boulevards. Basswood and hard maple round out a lot of the older residential canopy, particularly near Tyrol Hills. Because the terrain here is hillier than most inner-ring suburbs, root systems often follow slopes in ways that make for more complex grinding jobs.
Working the Golden Valley landscape
Bassett Creek winds through the middle of Golden Valley, and properties along its wooded banks often carry older oak and elm stumps from trees that have been there since before the postwar development boom. Theodore Wirth Park sits right on the city’s eastern edge, and homes bordering it sometimes deal with mature oak and basswood stumps from the park’s edge habitat. Sweeney Lake gives the city a quieter, more residential lake feel, with cottonwood and willow common along its shoreline. Golden Valley’s rolling terrain means our equipment setup varies more here than in flatter suburbs.
Ash borer & disease work in Golden Valley
Golden Valley has been actively removing infested ash from boulevards for several years, and a lot of private ash from mid-century plantings is reaching the end of its life around the same time. Dutch Elm disease remains a factor too, given the number of older elms still standing in wooded pockets near Bassett Creek and Tyrol Hills. The hilly terrain here also means storm damage can be more severe — the 2022 derecho toppled a number of large trees on Golden Valley’s wooded slopes. Between EAB, ongoing elm losses, and storm cleanup on sloped lots, this city sees a fairly steady and varied stump workload.
