Lawn Restoration After Grinding

Grinding solves the stump. It doesn't solve the crater of wood chips and dirt left behind — that's a separate step, and skipping it is the most common regret we hear from homeowners.

Once a stump is ground down, you’re left with a mix of wood chips, loose soil, and usually a shallow depression where the root flare used to be. Left alone, that spot will settle unevenly over the next year, grow weeds through the chip pile, and stand out against the rest of the lawn. Restoration means removing or working in the chips, backfilling the depression with black dirt, and getting grass established — either by seed or sod — so the area blends back into the yard. We offer this as an add-on to any grinding job, and honestly recommend it for anything in a visible front yard or high-traffic area.

How restoration works after grinding

We rake out the bulk of the wood chips first, since a thick chip layer left in place will rob nitrogen from new grass as it decomposes and create a soft, uneven spot. What we don’t haul off, we can work into garden beds elsewhere on the property on request. Then we backfill the depression with black dirt, tamping it in layers so it doesn’t sink further after rain. From there it’s a choice between seed, which is cheaper but takes 3-4 weeks to establish and needs regular watering, or sod, which looks finished within days but costs more and needs a flatter, more prepped base.

  1. Rake and remove or relocate wood chips from the grind site.
  2. Backfill the depression with black dirt in tamped layers.
  3. Rough-grade to match surrounding lawn level.
  4. Seed or lay sod depending on budget and timeline.
  5. Advise on watering schedule for establishment.

What this costs on top of grinding

Restoration is priced as an add-on to the grinding job itself, which still starts at our $250 minimum. Black dirt backfill runs $75-$150 depending on how deep the depression is — a 20-inch maple stump usually leaves enough of a hole to need the higher end of that range. Seed and straw cover typically add another $50-$100, while sod runs higher, often $150-$300 depending on square footage, since it needs a more carefully prepped base. All told, a straightforward grind-plus-restore on a mid-size stump — say $350 for a 20-inch oak grind, plus $125 backfill and $75 seed — lands around $550 total.

  • Black dirt backfill: $75-$150 depending on depression depth.
  • Seed and straw cover: typically $50-$100 additional.
  • Sod: $150-$300 depending on square footage and prep needed.
  • Chip removal (if not left on site) is included in the standard haul-off fee of $75-$150.

Deciding if you need restoration or can skip it

If the stump sat in an out-of-the-way corner of the yard, mulching the chips in place and letting grass slowly reclaim it over a season or two is a reasonable, cheaper option. But for anything in a front yard, near a patio, or in a lawn an HOA might flag for appearance, restoration is worth the add-on cost — an unfilled depression collects water, grows weeds, and can trip someone walking across it at dusk. We’ll tell you honestly on site whether your spot needs it or can be left to fill in naturally.

  • Stump is in a visible front yard or near the street.
  • Depression is deep enough to collect standing water after rain.
  • You’re selling the house soon and want a clean, finished lawn.
  • HOA rules require lawns to be free of bare patches or debris piles.
  • You want grass established before a specific event, like a graduation party.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does lawn restoration cost after grinding?

Black dirt backfill runs $75-$150, seed and straw add another $50-$100, and sod runs $150-$300 depending on area. On top of a stump grind starting at our $250 minimum, a typical restored job lands in the $400-$650 range total.

How long until grass grows back after restoration?

Seed takes about 3-4 weeks to establish with regular watering, longer in cooler months. Sod looks finished within days but needs 2-3 weeks to root in before regular foot traffic.

Can I just leave the wood chips in place instead of restoring?

You can, especially in low-visibility areas — the chips will break down over a season or two and grass will slowly reclaim the spot. It's cheaper but leaves a rougher, uneven patch in the meantime.

Do you guarantee the grass will grow?

We prep the site correctly — chip removal, proper backfill, and seed or sod appropriate to the season — but germination and establishment depend on watering and weather after we leave, so we don't guarantee final turf results.

Is sod or seed the better choice after stump grinding?

Seed is cheaper and fine if you're not in a rush. Sod costs more but gives you a finished look almost immediately, which matters if you're hosting an event or selling the house soon.
