Trees we grind most in Bloomington

Bloomington’s residential neighborhoods went in mostly during the 1950s-1970s boom, so a lot of the tree stock is aging out at the same time — silver maple, green ash, and boxelder dominate older blocks near Normandale and Penn Lake. The Nine Mile Creek corridor and Hyland Lake Park Reserve area have more natural stands of oak and basswood, since that land stayed wooded longer before development. Cottonwood shows up heavily near the Minnesota River valley on the city’s south side. A lot of what we grind here is simply old boulevard stock that’s reached the end of its lifespan, on top of ash losses from EAB.
