Trees we grind most in Minnetonka

Minnetonka’s older neighborhoods near the lake carry a lot of mature oak and hard maple, planted or preserved back when these were wooded estate lots, and that oak density makes oak wilt a genuine risk here. Cottonwood and silver maple line much of the shoreline itself, dropping large surface roots that turn into awkward stumps once a tree comes down. Ash is scattered throughout newer developments from the 80s and 90s, and most of it has died back or is dying from emerald ash borer at this point. Basswood and black walnut show up occasionally too, usually on the older, larger lots near Deephaven.

Working the Minnetonka landscape

Lake Minnetonka shapes almost everything about tree work in this city — homeowners along the shoreline in Wayzata Bay and near Grays Bay Causeway often deal with cottonwood and willow stumps sitting just feet from the water. We’ve also worked plenty of jobs around Purgatory Creek Park and the Lone Lake Park trail corridor, where mature oak canopy meets newer residential construction. The Ridgedale area on the city’s north side is more commercial and newer growth, so stump jobs there tend to be younger, faster-growing species like boxelder and honeylocust. It’s a city of contrasts — old lake-money oak groves on one side, newer plantings on the other.

Ash borer & disease work in Minnetonka

Emerald ash borer has worked through a lot of Minnetonka’s 1980s-era ash plantings, and the city has been proactive about removing infested boulevard trees before they become hazards. Oak wilt is arguably the bigger long-term concern here given how much mature oak canopy exists near the lake — we always recommend against pruning oaks between April and July because that’s when sap-feeding beetles spread the fungus between trees. The 2022 derecho also hit the west metro hard, and Minnetonka lost a number of large trees along Minnetonka Boulevard and near Glen Lake. Between ash, oak wilt, and storm cleanup, this city keeps a steady stream of stump work going year-round.

Common questions from Minnetonka homeowners

How much does stump grinding cost in Minnetonka?

Minnetonka pricing follows our metro-wide bands: $250 minimum, $275–$425 for medium stumps (12–24"), and $425–$650 for large (24–36"). A 26-inch cottonwood stump typically runs $425–$650. Text a photo for a fixed quote — no site visit required.

How long does it take to schedule a job in Minnetonka?

Minnetonka is about 10-15 minutes from our Eden Prairie base, so we're often able to schedule within a few days, sometimes sooner if we're already working nearby.

Do you grind stumps on steep or hilly lots near the lake?

Yes, this is common in Minnetonka. We assess the grade and access before quoting — some lakeshore lots need a smaller machine or extra time to get equipment into position safely.

Is oak wilt a concern for my Minnetonka property?

It can be, especially in older neighborhoods with dense oak canopy. If you're removing an oak that died suddenly in summer, oak wilt is worth considering, and we recommend grinding the stump promptly rather than letting it sit.

Did the 2022 derecho cause a lot of the stump work you see here?

It caused a fair amount, yes. Minnetonka Boulevard and the Glen Lake area lost several mature trees, and we're still occasionally called out for stumps left over from that storm.

Do I need permission from the city to remove a stump near Lake Minnetonka?

Private-property stumps don't need city approval, but shoreline work near the lake can fall under DNR or watershed district rules if it involves excavation near the water — we can help you figure out if that applies to your job.
